61 megapixels of full-frame resolution with outstanding dynamic range and Sony's best-ever autofocus system. My primary body for landscape, cityscape, and any work where maximum resolution matters. The IBIS system is exceptional for handheld work, and the 8K video capability is a bonus for behind-the-scenes content. Battery life is the one weakness โ carry extras.
Full-spectrum conversion โ the IR cut filter has been removed by a specialist, unlocking sensitivity to hydrogen-alpha wavelengths that are invisible to an unmodified sensor. The result is Milky Way images with dramatically richer colour and structure, especially in nebula-forming regions of the galactic core. Paired with the Sony 14mm GM it is the ultimate wide-field nightscape body.
Behind-the-scenes footage, timelapses of the setup process, and wide-angle action clips during hikes to locations. The TimeWarp and Night Lapse modes are genuinely impressive for a pocket-sized camera. I mount it to the tripod head or carry it as a POV cam during drone flights to document the session from the ground simultaneously.
The benchmark for astrophotography on Sony full-frame. f/1.8 at 14mm gathers extraordinary amounts of light, allowing short enough exposures to freeze stars without trailing while keeping ISO manageable. Coma is well-controlled at f/1.8 for a prime this wide. Also my first choice for interior architecture โ the 14mm focal length captures sweeping spaces in a single frame.
Compact, lightweight, and optically excellent. The 17-28mm range covers the most useful wide-angle focal lengths for landscape and cityscape work. f/2.8 makes it viable for astro when the 14mm isn't needed. A fraction of the weight of Sony's native wide zooms โ invaluable on long hike-ins where every gram matters.
My most-used lens for cityscape and travel work. The 70-200mm range covers the sweet spot for architectural compression โ isolating buildings, framing bridges, and compressing city layers into a dense, dramatic stack. f/4 is sufficient for cityscape work where you're always on a tripod. The compact form factor relative to the f/2.8 version makes it easier to carry all day.
The workhorse telephoto that does everything. At 600mm on the A7RV's 61MP sensor, the moon fills the frame with enough resolution to resolve individual craters and mountain ranges. For cityscape work, 400-600mm compresses distant skylines into architectural abstractions. The Sports version is built like a tank โ essential given how much fieldwork it sees.
Triple Hasselblad camera system covering wide, medium tele (70mm eq.), and tele (166mm eq.) focal lengths. The tele camera in particular transforms aerial compositions โ telephoto compression from altitude creates perspectives impossible to achieve with a single-camera drone. D-Log M colour profile preserves extraordinary dynamic range. 43-minute battery life is genuinely useful in the field.
1000-nit built-in display that is genuinely usable in full Georgia summer sunlight โ a phone screen simply isn't. Eliminates the overheating and lag issues that plague phone-based controllers during long sessions. The physical buttons and dials make exposure adjustments without taking your eyes off the aircraft. Non-negotiable for serious aerial work.
AI-assisted compact telescope with built-in sensor, motorised tracking mount, and onboard live stacking. Acquires targets in minutes, tracks automatically, and stacks frames in real time โ showing the accumulated result improving as you watch. The Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, and Pleiades cluster are all within reach from a suburban Georgia backyard with moderate light pollution.
Long exposure photography lives or dies on tripod stability. A quality carbon fibre tripod eliminates vibration for exposures from 2 seconds to 30 minutes. Non-negotiable for Milky Way, cityscape, and waterfall work. Weight versus rigidity matters โ carbon fibre gives you the stiffness of aluminium at a fraction of the weight for hike-in locations.
I carry a 3-stop, 6-stop, and 10-stop fixed ND plus a soft-edge 3-stop graduated ND for landscape work. The fixed NDs are optically cleaner than variables and don't add the X-pattern artifacts that variables produce at high stop settings. The graduated ND handles bright skies without HDR blending in post.
The most important planning tool in the kit. AR sun and moon positioning, Milky Way core planner, depth of field calculator, NPF rule calculator, and golden/blue hour timing for any location on earth on any date. I use it to plan every Milky Way session, every moonrise alignment, and every golden hour landscape shoot weeks before the actual date.
B4UFLY for a quick airspace check before any drone flight. Aloft for LAANC authorisation in Atlanta's Class B airspace โ the authorisation process takes minutes when done right, and is legally required for virtually every Atlanta metro flight. I apply the evening before any planned shoot, never on the morning of.
